Which is better to alter a wedding gown? let seams out or replace zipper with corset?
I've posted a few questions on here about my dilemma about returning or exchanging my gown, but davids bridal wouldn't do either and I really do love the gown. So...
Long story short I tried on a 10, which was too big and she sales lady insisted on an 8 because it fit me "so well in the shoulders and chest" but unfortunately it makes my hips look gigantic and you can see the indention where my navel is. I'm 120 (a tiny belly lol) but this dress in the stomach and hips (in the size its in) makes me look 400 pounds lol
I called my seamstress and she suggested 2 things: let the seams out, or replace the zipper with a corset (remove the zipper, sew in extra fabric, sew holes, insert ribbon to be tied like a corset)
Which would be better for the dress? Its a simple off the shoulder white gown, no sleeves just "straps" that are off the shoulder, no beads, lace, etc.
I understand.
Okay then, your two choices are good ones. But, first and foremost, check ALL of the seams near and around the waist to hip area. Literally, add up the seam allowance measurements and then subtract 1/2 of an inch for each seam. What is that number? Is that number big enough to allow the freedom of movement you think you will need to have the dress fit your body around the stomach and hips?? If the answer is no, do not bother with the seam alteration at all.
If there is plenty of seam allowance to maintain 1/2 inch new seams, then you need to do a seam test. Oh, but what the heck is a seam test? Have your seamstress take only one seam apart. Inspect the fabric to see if the seam line where the stitches were, has left needle holes or may leave a permanent crease in the dress. The thing is, if the dress was really snug and you moved a lot in it while it was tight, the stitches could have been stressed and caused the areas where the seam thread was to stretch those tiny stitch, creating stitch holes. Do you understand what I mean?
If this will not work to your satisfaction, then go with the corseted back. Your seamstress will have to remove the zipper and alter the very top back zipper area by making it smaller just a tad so that the distance between the gap at the newly corseted back around the hips and bust area is uniformly the same gap for consistency behind the laced ribbon up back. Depending on the fabric of the dress, you may elect to use grommets to string ribbon through rather than "sew holes" for the confidence in strength. These can be purchased on-line in every color of the rainbow, along with corset strings with nice finished edges. Also, consider stringing your corset so it is tied at the waistline,e rather than the center of the back at the shoulder blades for an unobstructed look after it is tied.
Also, it may be very hard if not impossible to find the same fabric to back the lace up corseted back. So, do not try. Instead, find a nice lace you can use or have your seamstress back the lace with the same color of fabric as your dress to make a fashion statement. I do think this could work in your case because your dress has clean lines and is of a classic design.
Good luck, don't worry, either way, this can be done.
