Ear Pain With Gold Earrings?
I've had my ears pierced for about 10 years. I do have very sensitive ears, and can only wear gold and silver earrings. For a few weeks, I stopped wearing earrings. Last night, I put in a beautiful pair of (definitely REAL) gold and opal earrings. My ears were pounding with pain, and I took them out this morning. My ears are all red and crusty and burning. I want to be able to wear these earrings tomorrow. I've never had problems like this with this pair. Is there anything to sooth my ears so I can put earrings on and wear them tomorrow? Thank you!
The red, crusty ears, burning with pain, are suffering from nickel sensitivity. Many or most people develop such a sensitivity when they wear jewellery containing nickel.
Jewellery made of 100% pure (24 karat) gold would be far too soft, so it is alloyed with other metals to make it wearable. For example, 14 karat gold is 50% gold; 20 karat is 5/6 gold and 1/6 other metals.
(I developed my nickel sensitivity from wearing 'sterling' silver: 92.5% silver, with the remainder being some other metal, probably nickel. Before wearing that particular pair of earrings, I was not sensitive; now I must be careful.)
Fortunately for me, jewellery sold within the European Economic Community is not allowed to contain nickel. This has a strong effect on jewellery sold in Canada. I do not know what the effect in other countries is, but I won't wear jewellery from Wal-Mart, for example, because of where it comes from.
('Surgical' stainless steel may also contain some nickel. Earrings sold as 'hypoallergenic" probably won't.)
My dermatologist has suggested that if I want to wear 'difficult' earrings, I should coat the parts that touch the ear with
-> transparent nail polish. (But it does chip off, and must be repeated.)
Antibiotics, such as NeoSporin are not useful to treat a metal sensitivity, but there may be some comfort from the local anaesthetic it contains. Any local anaesthetic will do the trick. I use OraGel.
