We have a male Black lab/Rottweiler or Shepard mix. He's about a year now and completely out of control.
We love him dearly, but he does not like to sit, stay just goes over his head, and he often leaves the yard and won't come back until he's good and ready.
How can I train him?
We want him to sit, stay, walk instead of pull us (we tried a choker chain...it didn't work at all), stay in our yard and maybe stay. Oh, and if I could get some advice on how to get him to stop begging for my food, that would be great.
He's an indoor dog more than outdoor because of our fence. He's really smart. When my mom says "Get out of my Kicten" he does that. When we say "Go to bed" he does it.
One more thing, he has eatten every collar and toy we gave him. How can we get him to leave his collar on his neck and to play with the toy instead of pulling the stuffing out..and he eats rocks, so harder toys won't work at all!
My dog was 2-3 years old when we got him from the shelter.
He was stubborn! He did not know a single trick and had no interest in doing any.
When the trainer tried to teach him to "sit" for multiple weeks with no luck, I was sure he would never learn anything.
Today, however, he sits on command. He's learned quite a bit since the early days.
You're wording doesn't indicate that you have any prior knowledge with training a dog, so I would suggest that you hire a professional.
Even if you have to resort to your local pet store (like Petsmart) for training, that is better than nothing and will get you on the right track.
Chewing collars, toys, and rocks sounds like your dog might just be bored. Chewing is a method of playing for dogs. If you don't already, try walking your dog for a continuous hour a day to stimulate him - not a leisurely walk where he sets the pace, but one with a mission where you keep him constantly walking.
Or when you catch him chewing on inappropriate items, correct him and replace the item with a bone or something else that you find suitable. Eventually he'll learn. Be consistent.
I think a trainer could help with most of your issues - they've probably seen it all or have resources that will be beneficial.
