White Jade Pendant
Is this real white jade and how can I tell if it's fake?
I was wearing my white jade pendant today and my Chinese friend asked me if it was real jade because she said white jade is supposed to be really valuable. The person I bought it from said it was a snow quartz but after doing some research i learned it was white jade. Here's what it looks exactly like:

Is white jade really that valuable? And how can I tell if it's real? Thanks
Unfortunately there are no simple tests to identify jade you can do at home. Firstly there two stones that are referred to as "jade" there is the mineral jadeite and there is nephrite, a completely different mineral. White is a colour found in both types, they can be told apart by eye but this takes years of experience of handling the two to do this. With regard to value the white types of both minerals are of very little value unless they are finely carved antique items, a pendant of the type in your picture is worth no more than a few dollars. The high value is found in examples of of green jadeite and the finest examples can be hugely valuable, recently a necklace of 27 beads each 14mm in diameter sold for a mind blowing nine and a half MILLION dollars at auction. I saw he necklace at the sale preview and if I had had the money I would have bought it - it was stunningly beautiful.
As far as stones having health/luck and other "mystic" properties it is all a load of rubbish. I have spent my life surrounded by every type of stone you can think of and many you have never even heard of, if they were of such benefit I should be a mini superman by now but I am a bit overweight, losing some of my hair and I need glasses to type this answer so there you go. Buy stones because you like them and forget all the idiotic claims dealers make up to sell them.
