I have been in the aquarium hobby for about 1.5 to 2 years. I currently have a 10 gallon aquarium. When I was a beginner a lot of my first fish died because I wasn't to aware about the bacterial process. Nowadays I have a beautiful aquarium which Im extremely proud of. I would love to move up to salt water. Obviously I would like to have fish only right now because with marine plants its harder and more $$$. My plan is to get a 14 gallon biocube, buy a protein skimmer, and just use the heater of my aquarium that i currently own. I wouldn't plan on having fresh and salt at the same time. So is it a good idea to consider buying a salt water aquarium or I should wait. I've met a lot of people who own reef tanks and they tell me that it's a lot easier to take care of salt water than fresh water aquariums. Please give me your honest opinion.
You should really do this. Couple things though. The biocube is a nice tank. You still need to buy live sand/argonite and live rock. 29 gallon is good but the 14 gallon is complete junk. It holds considerably less than 14 gallons and nearly 1/3 of that is the filter area. This leaves a tiny little space in the front which only looks like it is big. You would be much better and happier if you went with a standard 20g Long, then got a powerhead, 3 stage filter such as the aquaclear filter. Then get the lights to fit your needs.
I started my first reef in a 14 gallon cube and had no issues at all with it. I did however always hate that I could not as easily upgrade the tank the way a 20g long could be. It takes a good effort but small tank can be made to be very easy to maintain. Standard type kits are much easier to work with. I ended up loosing the cube and starting a 20L and it was a great choice. Tank maintenance should always be considered part of a hobby instead of a task though. Weekly water changes can be the hardest part.
